Fans have called for Britney Spears to retire from music following her UK comeback performance on The X Factor last weekend.

Spears has been criticised for delivering a “quite embarrassing” rendition of her new single 'Womanizer' on the reality TV programme.

The performance, her first in the UK for four years, came ahead of the release of her new album 'Circus', which is out today (December 1st).

One Gigwise reader, Bill, wrote: “If Britney was a contestant she would have been voted off. Poor miming and her moves weren't exactly slick either.

“She was completely uninterested in the contestants and didn't deserve her place on the show. Time to retire Britney.”

Another reader, Paul, was also upset by Spears' display, calling it “a major disappointment”.

“Britney was clearly embarrassed by her own performance, she couldn't wait to run off the stage. It just goes to show how good PR can make somebody very average seem very special.”

'Fantastic'

But Spears was defended by one fan, Julie, who said she was “fantastic”.

She added: “Who cares if she was miming? Don't you all know she is just practising and getting better each time. She is going to blow it away when she does it in the U.S. Watch for it!”

Spears appearance ended a short whistle-stop publicity tour which also included performances in Germany and France.

Asked by the show’s host Dermot O’Leary what she thought of the programme, Spears replied: “Amazing, I met so many different people and I love being here in London. It’s awesome."

  • Believe me most of her fans were very happy with her performance and we do not want her to retire. The fans had nothing negative to say. It is the media, who seem to enjoy criticizing Britney's every move, that weren't happy with her performance. But lets face it, no matter what she does some people will never be happy.

  • She has virtually no input in the creative process or in her own management and she mimes - what does she do exactly?

    • Shame on you, dirt bag. Where is your respect?

  • For Gods sake, the girl is recovering from a major mental breakdown. Of course she is not going to be 100% brilliant, but she's improved a hell of a lot since the MTV performance. I think she should be applauded for turning her life around and showing she's now on a positive track, instead of being berated like this. Shame on you critics and well done Brit - looking forward to seeing her get better and better!

  • These "expert" commentators don't seem to be too complementary, do they! I wonder how many of them have made a success of their music careers? Rather leave the lady alone if you don't have anything good to say!
