John Paul Jones: Led Zeppelin Will Tour Without Robert Plant

Bassist says...

Share

Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has confirmed that the band plan to tour without frontman Robert Plant.

Jones said he and the group's remaining members – guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Jason Bonham – “really hope” to return to the road, although he didn't specify when.

Last month, Plant said he found the constant speculation around the band's future “frustrating and ridiculous”, and insisted that he “will not be touring or recording with Led Zeppelin”.

Jones told an audience at a guitar exhibition in Devon last weekend that the band had auditioned singers to take Plant's place.

"As you probably know, Jimmy, Jason and I are actually rehearsing and we've had the odd singer come in and have a bash,” egigs quoted Jones as saying.

“As soon as we know — which we don't — we will let you know. But we really hope that something is going to happen soon because we really want to do it and we're having a lot of fun, actually, just rehearsing.”

Tour Year Break

Plant's statement last month suggested that he would not tour again for at least two years following the conclusion of his current US shows with Alison Krauss.

Jones admitted that the group weren't sure about what Plant's plans were. “He really doesn't want to make loud music anymore. We do. I mean, I love acoustic music, but it doesn't stop me from turning something up,” Jones added.

Calls for a full Led Zeppelin reunion tour have been consistent since the bands reunion show at the O2 Arena last December - which attracted 1 million applicants for just 9,000 pairs of tickets.

  • No Plant, no JOHN Bonham, no Led Zeppelin. Very simple. I hate to see my favorite band tarnish its mystique and uncompromising legacy.

  • Who knows - it could be true, but it could also be more hype designed to put off a tour for a year to avoid the recession ( and fewer ticket sales ) and also to pump band fees higher - who knows ? After a while it could all go flat, however...who knows what will happen ? I'll believe it when I see it...

  • You are talking about 3 fantastic musicians getting together to do something before they get to old. Why shouldn't they get together. Who makes the rules anyway. The only suggestion would be to do whatever they have planned under a different name.

  • I'll go see them. Page and JPJ won't be on this planet in 10 -15 years and who knows when we will see this group play again. If John Lennon and Paul McCartney decided to play together and tour, wouldn't you go?

  • Robert made the choice not to re-join. It's actually a good thing. Jimmy, Jason and John-Paul still have a lot to offer musically - more than the crap that is out nowwdays. 'sides, if you know anything about Jimmy Page, is that he is a PERFECTIONIST and whom ever he chooses as the new frontman will most certainly kick ass. So I'll be at a Zeppelin concert in 2009 while you nay sayers are at home with your mommies playing pocket pool while trying to see Cinemax through the cable sc

  • I dearly love Robert Plant's vocals and his lyrics but he seems to be on an ego trip and I think it's a shame he won't tour with LZ. Perhaps he can't hit those screaming awesome notes that he used to. I hope they find someone to sit in so we can enjoy some good old live LedZep stuff. Of course it won't be the same without Robert and Bonham but it'll never be exactly the same as when they were young anyway so why not?

  • Oh Robert... I was sure he was too girly to tour with the band. I'll be happy with Jimmy & John, and mini-bongo. Screw him.

  • Ok...so maybe "The Song Doesn't Remain the Same"...I'll take the closest I can get to the mighty Zep. We still have fantastic artists in Bonham, Jones, and the greatest of all time...Page. Wishin' that Plant would join the boys is like wishing John Bonham back behind the drums.

  • They can do it. Jimmy Page and JPJ started this band. Bonzo (God bless) and Plant were brought in to do the job and they did it better than anyone in the world could have imagined. Jimmy Page and JPJ can do what they want with LZ, what more can you ask than Jason Bonahm on drums? You think Bonzo would've been upset about that? Plant is making the mistake, and whoever replaces him will do it honorably and won't tarnish anything.
