Metallica Cancel Interview Over Illegally Downloaded Album Review

Metallica Cancel Interview Over Illegally Downloaded Album Review Add to My Fav Bands List
Share

Metallica cancelled an interview with a Swedish publication after one of their journalist's admitted to illegally downloading the band's new album.

In a review of 'Death Magnetic', which is currently number one in the UK, Jonn Jeppsson confessed to downloading a different version of the record – and said he preferred it to the official one.

It's understood that the songs had been edited by a Metallica fan, who then uploaded them onto the internet.

In a statement Per Sundin, president of Universal Music Sweden, called Jepssonn's review for Sydsvenskan “totally unacceptable”.

"The reviewer is referring to a BitTorrent where someone has altered the original songs. The reviewer explains exactly where one should go in order to download the file that totally infringes on a copyright,” he told Blabbermouth.

"It's not only an illegal file, but an altered file. The reviewer also writes that this is how the album should have sounded.

"File-sharing of music is illegal. Period. There's nothing to discuss. That fact - that Sydsvenskan has a writer that has downloaded this music illegally and then makes mention of an illegal site in his review.”

As previously reported on Gigwise, Metallica will perform their new album at the O2 Arena in London tonight.

  • This new album kicks so much a*$ it’s ridiculous. It’’s just like their old stuff for the most part. It’’s the best project they’’ve done in 20 years, and I’’d buy it again and again (and I DID buy it. so should’’ve this Swedish guy)

  • Some of the BEST, and most original bands out today actually PROMOTE sharing/downloading of music because it’s the fastest and best way to reach their listeners. The fact is, that most music today sucks...horribly. We should have every right to preview an album and then make an informed decision whether or not to pay our hard earned money on the CD.

  • afaik they don’t write there songs by there own but are just interpreters with a strong branded name. That a fan was able to improve the song and make it even better is an interesting case and should ring some alarmclocks of the managment since it means, that they did a very bad job. Well, or at least they should try to hire that fan!

  • To have someone give a good review to a fan edited version versus the original is pretty bad... Metallica just needs to call it quits or get their act together for the modern man. They tried this battle before and it made them look bad. They try it again and they will not even be able to beg people to torrent their albums in the future.

From now on I won’’t download them. In fact I wont listen to your music at all. Fuck you, you rich arrogant pieces of shit.

  • How would YOU like to work for free...selling albums is how Metalica (or any band) makes a living. And i don’t care that they are filthy rich...they should get paid for the product they produce.

    • This has been gone over thousands of times. They dont make that much money from the CD’s. The CD’’s more or less promote their concerts and gear, where they actually make the money. Metallica is just being the RIAA’’s bitch, as always since the days of napster.

      ~ by FormerFan 9/16/2008

  • If the song is altered, then its not the work of Metallica is it? Seriously, this faux-Victim BS ’ah my work is stolen, my poor rights are infringed, now gimme money!!’’ has just got to stop.

  • Did the interviewer really talk about a version that was edited by a fan or did he talk about the promo copy that was not as loud as the retail copy of the album? Or did he talk about the comparison to the Guitar Hero 3 version of the songs, which show far more dynamics than the Album versions? Death Magnetic was really horrendously mixed, I doubt someone can really do something about this without the original unmixed material.

  • Actually, Sweden does not recognize international copyright laws. What is considered illegal in the US is not considered illegal in Sweden. It’s time they learn that the US doesn’’t make global laws, and US laws cannot be enforced in other countries. Chances are the Swedish media are making a laughing debacle of them for this.

  • Let’s not forget that Metallica was the driving force behind shutting down Napster years ago (when it was free sharing) because they weren’’t making any money off it. They only care about dollar $ign$ and were probably offended at the thought anyone could improve" on what they "created." Most artists allow radio stations to stream their albums to get people to try (and then buy). They need to get over themselves.
