Metallica pretty much defined heavy metal with 1986's 'Master Of Puppets' and their self-titled 1991 album. Then they went a bit commercial in the nineties and suffered amid controversy over file-sharing this decade, and it seemed for a time like the glory days might be over. And now? With an average age of 45 and families to boot, you'd expect America's greatest metal export to be taking it steady a little. Not so, as Gigwise discovered at a very special preview of their ninth studio album...

'Death Magnetic' descends upon the thrash metal world on September 12th as one of the most seamless and ferocious Metallica albums to date. It's kind of a wonder that they can still hack it, but after 2003's 'St Anger' suggested that Metallica was tailing in the headlights of younger bands that cited them as a major influence, 'Death Magnetic' demonstrates a band back to reclaim their proverbial metal crown.

It's a headlong, balls-out, instrument-led eighty minutes long, something that newcomers might find pretty exhausting. A thudding heartbeat percussion introduction, overlaid with a haunting guitar-riff, lasts just seconds before Hammett smashes through without a smidgen of subtlety with leaden chords that set the tone for the rest of the album. 'Death Magnetic' is unmistakably a Metallica album, soaked in Hammett's guitar flourishes and Ulrich's propulsive percussion as it is, but it's one that shows a marked progression, especially musically. Several tracks hit the eight minute mark, but there isn't a structural component in any that lasts longer than ninety seconds or so before Ulrich switches tempo or Hammett slides effortlessly into another electric vein. The preoccupation here is in the transparent musical dexterity and thrash metal mastery that Metallica have managed to achieve.

There are middle-eastern overtones in the twisting guitar-solo opening of 'All Nightmare Long', while 'Cyanide' features a much cleaner, distortion-free 'bouncing' bass, evidence of Robert Trujillo's contribution in his first recorded album performance. What is most striking is the departure from vocal-led writing as on 'Load' and 'Reload', a hangover from 'St Anger', perhaps, and a welcome one at that. Nearly every track oscillates between distorted power chords of ferocious, if not generic, weightiness, into guitar solos that are both plaintive and beguiling, with vocals and lyrics very much the afterthought.

The review continues here.

  • The instrumentals on Death are fine, but James simply can’t sing anymore. His crappy voice ruins the album and every Metallica live show that I have heard lately (like Bonnaroo 08). Metallica can live on, but James needs to pack it up.

    • If James needs to pack it in then every other artist alive needs to pack it in you stupid, stupid excuse for a human being! He’s the reason why I like music today you dick!!

    • His voice now is just different..thats normal. The only one who needs to pick up is you man.

    • yeah his voice is different but keep in mind his is like 50 years old! I don’t care who you are but you are going to sound very different.... any way Death Magnetic sounds great and I think is a return to the metallica that we all know and love!

    • YOU ARE A TRUE DUMBASS. HETFIELD IS NO DOUBT SURPRISINGLY AND FEROCIOUSLY AWESOME. I MEAN I AM IN COMPLETE AWE OVER THIS NEW MUSIC. I SO CAN’T WAIT TO RELISH IN THE CD AND THE SHOW MF!!

~ by Si from Trenton 9/6/2008

    • The guitars are not tuned low on this album, causing James to use a higher range, he admits himself, he can longer really reach. The result, to me, is a more raw sounds, like the old days. Nothing wrong with that.

    • Yeah, well, that’s just like...your opinion man...and you clearly know nothing about the vocality of a record

  • wtf are u smoking? I think his voice is one of the best parts of the album...different than his old style but a more growly type...he can’t sing" persay...the higher vocals of the 80s or early 90’’s as he has come out and said TBA damaged his vocal chords. But what Death Magnetic does great is slam your ass against a wall and holds you from breathing without letting up until the end of the final song...i effin love it. You have right to opinion tho, and

But you have to keep in mind, Metallica was never known for their AMAZING vocals. Hetfield has a VERY distinct voice, and it is an integral part of what makes Metallica Metallica. I’m not saying that he has the voice of an angel, but saying he needs to pack it up is like telling Dimebag (RIP) to put the guitar down. The album rocks, the vocals rock, long live the met

  • It is kind of funny how some reviews say that Judas Kiss is not all that interesting, when much of the fan base feels it is one of the best tracks. Perhaps some critics don’t understand how well it will play live. And in the end, it is the live band that still destroys ever other metal band (even if Hetfield’’s voice live is not as good as we might like).

  • Personally I think this is Metallica’s best album since And Justice For all. The Black album had plenty of great songs, but found the band being scaled back creatively. The creativity level was high on Load/Reload, but there were too many weak tracks. I won’’t even talk about St. Anger. This record just flat out kicks ass and it has the potential to be a monster blockbuster for this band. Job well done.

  • The lyrics of The Day That Never Comes have nothing to do with an anti-war stance. Listen to or read the lyrics. Despite what people see in the video, James himself essentially said that is not what the song is about, just how the theme of the song is framed. The lyrics clearly are more about an individual (likely James himself) waiting to get revenge on someone who hurt him in the past. Be as anti-war as you want, but that is a pretty bad misinterpretation of the song meaning.

  • Um, get your facts straight. The video for The Day... may have been war-based, but the song itself is actually about forgiveness and James’’ relationship with his father. I’’m nitpicking though - mostly a good review. I think DM is f’’ing amazing. It is easily their hardest since Justice and their fastest since Puppets, yet it retains just a dash of their 90’’s sound - just enough to keep the album sounding like

  • I’m not even going to humor that moron for his thoughts on the vocals. As a fan for over 20 years (scary) I am happy to have Metallica back. I, like a good portion of the old fan base, departed after the eponymous 1991 album. With Bob Rock at the helm and a fickle, genre-shifting decade, Metallica lost sight of who they were. Bravo, Rick Rubin for resurrecting the metal masters. To Metallica: happy to have you back.

And as far as James goes, he may have sounded a little strained in live recordings over the last decade, but on this album he sounds great, seriously. While Metallicas early albums were definetly the best musically, James matured vocally and has come into his own. Listen to his Waylon Jennings cover on the tribute record. • People for some reason don’t accept that Metallica rock harder than the younger bands. And, Death Magnetic is the album which should have come out after ...And Justice For All. It is the album which should have been there instead of the Black Album. It is the best release this year so far.

  • I would like to read at least one review that doesn’t mention their past. This is a great album period! It does not need the context to justify it. If I were a brand new listener that never heard of Metallica. This album would have me hooked for life. There are not too may albums that I can recall where I listened to it 3-4 times a day, for a week straight....and love it more and more with each listen. They hit the nail on the head with this one.

    • Of course it needs context... a band of their magnitude deserves context you fool

  • I’ve been an open protestant of Metallica since the black album. As far as I was concerned Metallica sold out and sucked from the opening chords of Enter Sandman. I still listen to all the earlier stuff Justice on back. I have been waiting for DM with anticipation. I would have to say.......it is not as good as as a whole as Justice or earlier albums...but MY GOD WAY BETTER than the black album or anything else. Because of My Apocalypse" I am now a Metallica fan again

  • It’s definitely their best album since Justice. Amazing how hard on them some of the reviews are. I think everyone is in top form and Hetfield’’s does some of the best, most full-on singing he’’s ever done. Do what I did. I downloaded the album illegally. Was shocked that I REALLY liked it. Then went to Amazon and pre-ordered it. Figure it out for yourself.

  • James sounds great on this album, I LOVE his raw voice and think it makes the album and not break the album like others have said. Listened to it maybe 15+ times and still want more. Go and listen to some of the crap thats around at the moment over 15 times in less than a week and you’ll go crazy, trust me. METALLICA ROCK AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THEM ON MONDAY! :)

  • It’s not BETTER than the 1980s but some of the songs are just as good. if they did a replica of the past no one would like it, and if they did a repeat of St Anger no one would like it, so this is the perfect album.

  • As a Metallica fan since 1986, Death Magnetic to me is their best record since ...And Justice For All. I enjoyed the Black Album, Load, ReLoad and even St. Anger. But Death Magnetic is so freakin good its sick and I can’t stop listening to it on constant rotation. I simply love this record.

  • Yeah jonathan, like WTF? The vocals are crap compared to when? 20 YEARS AGO? Of course his voice is gonna be different.. but its not THAT different. And he (JH) still cuts it live.. This album has taken a few listens but its growing on me. Which has nearly always been the case with the albums i love anyway. Cant wait for the tour!! Yeah!! Metal (sideways) up the nay-sayers asses!

  • hmmmm... now after most of u torned down poor jonathan u may need a more present object of hate ??? Metallica is Commerce... Metallica is cheap play... and James is a whimp... they just make music only for money and they lost the love and sense for it. U find em Metalalike? come to Wacken and see em get laught off from Stage. No true Matalhead would ever buy any of em Songs... ur all just Commerce-Metals... they should go play Guitarhero ...not torture us MHs with another cheap sheet of iron.

  • Wow what a bunch of thoughtless posts... im 24 and been listening to matallica for over 21 years... let me tell you that all of their music.. including st. anger has a place... D.M. is amazing... show me one more band that can reinvent their sound for almost every record and come up with memorable music each time? most bands have a sound.. as does tallica and they sit on it.. these guys like to evolve and stay true to themselves.... every song on D.M. is fantastic.. think your better? prove it?
