Heavy Metal Fans More 'At Risk Of Developing A Mental Illness'

New study claims...

Heavy Metal Fans More 'At Risk Of Developing A Mental Illness'
Share

Teenagers are at risk of depression and mental illness if they listen to a particular genre of music, a recent study has concluded.

Doctors are being asked to put forward questions about their patients’ musical tastes to determine aspects on their social life and their risk of committing suicide.

A study, published in today's Australasian Psychiatry journal, claims that teenagers who listen to heavy metal are big on unprotected sex, self-harm and shoplifting, with fans of pop having to deal with curiosity on their sexuality and worries about peer-acceptance.

It’s also claimed that those who listen to dance indulge in more drug use, no matter what their socio-economic background is.

Jazz fans struggle with social acceptance, usually settling down as misfits and ‘loners’. Rap fans are also keen on theft, violence and anger, according to the study.

Nothing was mentioned on the genres of indie, punk or alternative.

  • So a person\'s issues can have an influence on which types of music they might gravitate towards, eh? Well, knock me over with a feather!!! Anyone with the slightest hint of common sense already knew this. By the way, good job at propagating the Heavy Metal stereotype by mentioning said genre in the headline... Arsehole. Metal... Music\'s underdog since 1970.

  • That is total bullshit! Getting into metal actually helped me realize I did NOT have a depression problem, even tho my doctors wanted me on all kinds of drugs for it. It also helped me get off the drugs and start having better self-esteem. Explain that, those of you who think you know so much about metal without listening to it!!!

  • Who ever thought of this theory ought to be kicked in the head seriously! Metal is the only kind of music I listen to and has helped me through so many of my problems. Ever had a bad day at work and needed to blow off some steam? Get in your car and put on some Slayer, crank it up and you feel all better. Not a care in the world. But yeah Metal will always be the black sheep of genre’s in music and nothing will ever change that. Society sucks!

  • What a waste of time and money. Everyone knows metal fans all worship Satan and set fire to churches for fun. Self harm is for Emo and goth types. All gangstas are criminals and should be locked up. Have to admit though, I do like the fact that pop listeners are highly sexually confused. Who the hell did they interview for this shit ?

  • Ha. All the metal fans come on to defend metal by saying it saved them from mental illness, in response to an article that says metal listeners are more prone to mental illness. It never said metal caused the illness. And by the way, it’s not a theory, it is the statistical result of a study. Yeahhh!!! QED! Ozzy! Captian Obvious!!! WORROOAAAHHH!!!!

  • Hmmm, now we are talking about teenagers. Right? Most kids go with what is popular at the time. Half of teen suicide attempts are primarily to get attention. I think people tend to listen to music that suites their personalities. I don’t think the music makes the personality. I believe the personality chooses the music. All music talks about sex and drugs, come on that is Americas best seller. Why waste the time on a study?

  • I do not believe that stereotyping metal fans to be more prone to mental illnesses is true. Just because someone is a metal fan does not mean they will shoplift or engage in violent behaviour. It depends on the environment the teenager is in and how their personality inflicts with it. For Example: If a teenager is abused and is situated in a negative environment they may seek for music that suits their emotions. Another example to approach is that Marilyn Manson has been a target of blame and li

  • linked to school shootings. The reason teenagers like Marilyn Manson is because he has a different style; such as an outcast and they can relate to his music from the anger he portrays. It is wrong to say that because of metal music a teenager is more prone to mental illness. The real reason is that they have been angry or depressed from the start and metal music is just something that calms their nerves. Anyways I think it would be best to stop looking for answers to how teenagers get depres

  • That is one of the most ridiculous studies I've ever seen. Basically stereotypes over and over. Heavy metal fans are more prone to suicide??? I think not. The type of metal I listen to, death metal discourages that type of thing and boosts your energy level and confidence. Ask anyone who listens to it. That study was inaccurate.
