Apple have unveiled a second generation model of their iPhone at a conference in San Francisco.
The new phone, launched by the company’s chief executive Steve Jobs, will be cheaper and supports more common 3G networks.
Speaking to delegates at the company’s annual WWDC technology conference, Jobs said that it was important that the phone be made “more affordable” for customers.
The cheapest iPhone 3G will sell for $199, with a larger 16GB model, which will also be available in white, selling for $299.
To demonstrate the new model, Jobs loaded a website on two iPhones simultaneously – one using 3G and the other using the old EDGE connection. The new 3G model took 21 seconds to load.
As widely predicted, the new phone will also include a built-in GPS system.
The new phone will ship on July 11th in 22 countries, with Australia being included for the first time, Jobs told delegates.
In addition to the new phone, Jobs also premiered a host of new software for the product, including a program that allows users to make their own music directly on device.
