Parents Launch Website Protesting Against 'Suicidal' Emo Music

My Chemical Romance are targetted by parents...

Share

Gigwise has been informed about a website set up by parents who are worried about what they perceive as the 'glorification of self-injury and suicide' in emo music.

The in-depth website provides a guide as to why they believe emo inspires self injury and suicide, it also provides 'tragic examples', hard-hitting pictures, the dangers and what parents can do to protect their children.

They also outline bands and songs – most notably those of My Chemical Romance – which they believe spout dangerous messages to young people. You can see the site here

We were alerted to it by a commenter on a previous story, who wrote: “My daughter tried to kill herself. At first, she was a happy child, then she became emo. She said it was 'emotional.' She began cutting. She hid it at first, but we found out after she tried suicide.”

The comments come at a highly contentious time in the wake of the suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond from Kent.

A coroner said that the type of music she listened to was “very disturbing”, while certain sections of the press published articles strongly condemning the genre of music she was listening to.

This inspired emo fans to protest outside The Daily Mail's London offices over their treatment of the story.

My Chemical Romance also reacted by saying that they are categorically anti-violence and anti-suicide, denying that they ever promote it. They also sent out their condolences to Hannah Bond's family.

However, this will have done nothing to appease the Parents Against Emo lobby, who write on their site:”When you see a group of people talking about pain, nothingness, self injury and suicide, should we then be surprised when we see them doing what they are talking about?  Their music, poetry, and dress are all telling us something.  When are we going to pay attention to what they are telling us?”

  • ”Parents” looking for someone else to blame, why don’t they look in the mirror? That song lyrics section is bizarre, have these people not heard of metaphors and allusion?

  • What a load of shit. Personally I don’t like MCR’s music but they don’t deserve to be blamed for teenagers killing themselves. Are Radiohead going to be blamed for glorifying suicide next? ”No Surprises” contains the lyrics ”I’ll take a quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide”. And I’m going to see them in Malahide tomorrow, hope the gig doesn’t result in a mass suicide, fucking tossers.

  • jesus christ almighty. i just love these parents who, instead of taking responsibility for their actions, choose instead to blame the dangerous music they listen to. i’’m an MCR fan and i hardly feel suicidal. their music cheers me up in fact. this website is a load of shit and these parents are pathetic.

  • LISTEN to your kids - find out what they are into - stop trying to control everything - and if you think your kid is going to off themselve over music lyrics... you need help too.

  • It DOES happen. Lots of kids are stupid (some are proud to label themselves as metalheads, "clubbers", "emos", and so on) and some ARE going to do whatever they THINK the band is telling them to do, even if the bands are NOT telling them to do anything (which they’’re not). Yes, a lot of people think it’’s cool to cut themselves, they’’re weak minded kids. Some aren’’t even depres

  • Those parents are blind. If they knew anything about My Chemical Romance then they should know that they are AGAINST SUICIDE. appartently these parnets just need someone to blame because they are too proud to take the blame for themselves. see, i have this crazy idea, that maybe the kids kill themselves because they are sick of their parents [ aka the people who made this site]. I am a very dedicated MCR Fan/Supporter so they can shut up, because for one thing.. I AM NOT DEAD.

  • And what of My Chemical Romance’s award-winning work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation , which exists to grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions? In just a few years, My Chemical Romance has welcomed eight teens with life-threatening medical conditions for amazing wishes, earning the band recognition in the Foundation’s Celebrity Hall of Fame." • And in 1985, it was Judas Priest that was blamed for causing a suicide pact in two teenaged boys. They’re hardly emo. The bottom line is, when someone self-injures, there is more going on than the music they listen to. And I speak AS someone who has self-injured. They may blame it on the music, as a way of deflecting attention from the underlying cause(s), but music isn’’t the cause. Period.

  • a song by the band Motion City Soundtrack, a HAPPY band wrote the lyrics ’let’’s get fucked up and die’’. Does that mean that them or any other band that talks about suicide, death, depression, a horrible world, etc. are trying to get all teenagers to kill themselves? OF COURSE NOT, People are gonna do whatever they are gonna do. It sucks I know, and i know from experience, but that’’s just life, sorry.

  • Holy Crap! That is the worst bullshit I’ve ever heard, and I’’ve heard a lot from parents! When are we going to pay attention to what they are telling us? I don’’t know... Maybe by trying to listen to them?! When do parents learn that the more they hold us back, the more we want to break free! We wouldn’’t find these things as fascinating if they stopped forbidding them!! By Mother Earth, I hate when they can’&

(i mean music in general, not just mansons)

  • The song section is just laughable. They find one line out of an entire song that sounds relatively emo, and that automatically makes the whole thing horrible. Really, these parents need to stop blaming the music and start thinking Well, maybe if I just listened to my child and didn’t dismiss their problems, they would have never taken their life."

  • My Chemical Romance’s whole goal has always been to save lives. Oh yes, everytime I hear the lyrics I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this worl alone" I wanna kill myself... NOT. Fuck this shit. Yes some bands are sort of pushing it on people, but My Chemical Romance doe the opposite. Parents need to shut the fuck up, because My Chemical ROmance is a great band, with a great point to make, full of great people. Deal with it. They just want someone to

  • It’s just nonsense, I visited the site and looked at their ’’proof’’ and the page about ’’emo’’ lyrics. They think people kill themselves because a song says ’’I think I’’ll blow my brains against the ceiling’’ but it seems that they forget about the rest of the text ’’Think happy thoughts (x8)’’ and maybe i

  • Have they even listened to the songs they label as ’emo’’? Because anyone who’’s ever listened Panic at the Disco knows it’’s really, really happy music. Sure, the lyrics are a bit weird, but that’’s why they won a prize for worst lyrics -_- And if you cut your head off ’’cause they’’re singing ’’I think I’’ll blow my head agai

  • oh god what a bunch of horse shit. These parents who say this type of shit have got to be so blind that they don't even notice their children. Dude.. my parents hardly ever notice what I do, and I tried that suicidal thing a few time and they still haven't noticed. I went out and said it and my mom asked if I was a lesbian. Stupid parents. And what the hell? MCR has nothing to do with suicidal teens. Parents always find something to blame, not wanting to accept that they are the reason
