Music fans have been in contact with Gigwise after an inquest into the suicide of teenage girl said they found elements of the emo movement “very disturbing”.

Hannah Bond, 13, hung herself from a bunk bed in her bedroom after telling her parents that she was going to kill herself.

Bond, a devout following of emo - which stands for emotional - was described by her mother as a “normal girl”.

But Roger Sykes, the coroner leading the inquest into the teenager’s death, voiced his concerns about the girl’s involvement with the emo movement.

Bond was a big fan of My Chemical Romance, a band who are often associated with the genre.

Responding to yesterday’s news story, Gigwise reader Rich said he was amazed “how the news media manages to blame a band or an entire genre of music for someone’s suicide or a school shooting every time they can.”

Another reader, Demolition Lover, defended My Chemical Romance, saying the band are “all about helping people and saving people and overcoming addiction”.

Many music fans who contacted Gigwise gave different definitions of emo and questioned the real roots of the genre.

Chris, who was one of the first people to respond, said it was “an un-entertaining music genre that has involved into a lifestyle choice for people who claim not to want to follow a fashion.”

“It’s fundamentally hypocritical. Not too mention the impressionable youth feel they have to mimic the depressive and sad emotions often portrayed in this genre,” he added.

    • Yeah You’re right they didn’t do anything.I mean its not like the band said ”Hey Go kill Yourself!” Her parents probably gave her hell, and pushed her way to far. They should have paid more attention to her right after she said that.

  • blaming a band for this girl’s death is NO SENSE AT ALL music doesn’t kill ppl. It seems this girl has a lot of issues, parents need to watch after their children, its so typical blaming others for our mistakes. MCR doesn’t deserve this, the lyrics of the band have helped me to carry on, you need to listen their music first, and then you say they support suicide. SHOW some respect for these talented musicians.

  • If her love for My Chemical Romance was the cause of her suicide, then the only person to blame is herself. If you love a band that much, you would love it enough to listen to their message within the lyrics of each song. If she just wanted to go with that stupid emo trend, then its just her damn fault. She should have been a big enough fan to listen to the lyrics such as ”I am NOT afraid to keep on living”. Its just extremely silly to blame a band because someone whos a fan commited

  • A few things... ”Emo” isn’t really Emo anymore. Since when did listening to Emotive punk music mean you have to cut/kill yourself? Have you even listened to MCR’s music? They’re trying to SAVE lives. But even if it did when did MCR become responsible for other peoples bad parenting? Parents! If your child threatens to kill themselves... TALK TO THEM. Find out why. Don’t just wait til it’s too late, then blame other people.

  • Ive been been following my chemical romance since they first came out i have and i do admit they make good music its im not saying its not there complete fault behind this its just that the simple fact that she had to lose her life so young is the really sad part there had to more behind this but i do believe this ”EMO” thing had to with it.

  • People need to stop blaming bands for music taken out of context. The orig. article called MCR an emo band but used the lyric ”Although your dead and gone, your memory will go on,” It didn’t tell her to kill herself. It was meant as a story to comfort people about the idea of death. That doesn’t seem Emo to me. The girls death was caused by neglect. Once they saw scars, they should have done something about it. PS: MCR hates Emo and Self Injury. http://www.youtube

  • it makes me sick! If theres anyone to blame, it should be her parents. They should of realised there daughter had issues and blaming the one band who’s done nothing but ever help people is dispicable. Gerard Way has been suicidal in his lifetime, he knows the harm it does to someone, he’s always saying people should seek help, it makes no sense to blame this band! Just makes me angry. Nothing but aSilly Little Girl.

  • people are just looking to blame someone else for their own failures, and music is always in the firing line. There’s never this much attention when music saves a life, or really fucking helps people, there’s more lives saved than lost but of course positive things dont make such a good story now do they?

  • Hannah told her parents she was going to kill herself. They did nothing to stop her. If I told my parents I wanted to commit suicide they would take it as a joke but they would look after me just in case. Blaming a band or a genre for the matter is completely irrational. If I like them or not I won’t say it. But the band didn’t kill the girl she killed herself and the parents who are to blame put the guilt over some public persona ’cos it’s easier and anyw

  • I spent almost a year and a half with no friends, because no one accepted me for who I am, then I started listening to emo and I met a bunch of new people, and now, when the kids at my school call me names and bully me all I can do is say they can bite me because I now have friends who I feel comfortable and safe around. Emo music brought me that, and for me, it saves lives-especially MCR. They are very positive actually-I am not afraid to keep on living I am not afraid to walk this world alone.
