Emo Movement Under Fire Over Teenage Hanging

Coroner says genre is 'very disturbing'...

Share

A teenage girl committed suicide because she thought the act would impress fans of emo music, an inquest has been told.

Hannah Bond, 13, hung herself from a bunk bed in her bedroom after telling her parents that she was going to kill herself.

The teenager, who was described by her mother as a “normal girl”, apparently left a suicide note which was signed with the nickname Living Disaster.

The inquest was told that the teenager had lived a double life and was a devout following of emo music.

The coroner in the inquest, Roger Sykes, said he found elements of the emo movement “very disturbing”.

Bond was a fan of My Chemical Romance and had spoken secretly on chatrooms about The Black Parade – which was also the title of the band’s last album.

According to the Telegraph, in a tribute book at the teenager’s school one pupil wrote: “I hope you enjoy the black parade.”

It emerged recently that fans of emo, which stands for emotional, were being attacked in cities across Mexico because of their appearance.

At a concert in the country last month, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way spoke directly to fans, saying the band “don’t want to see any fucking violence.”

What do you think about the coroner’s verdict? Is it unfair to blame emo? Leave a comment below...

Some of the band members may have suffered emotional or mental breakdowns, but they certainly don’t encourage suicide - if anything they talk openly about over coming it. People just want someone to blame for their failings.

This girl told her parents she was going to kill herself. She was troubled and ignored. Way to go mom and dad for making Emo responsible for your kid. You can’t wash your hands of this one. • ”Emo” was never about depression or self harm, but simply a music genre. Emotional music. My Chemical Romance has never once said they were emo. It’s been brought up to them that media sees them as this, so they’ve fought back. They are, in all aspects, against ’EMO’. They’ve made the band to save lives. To fight AGAINST depression and self harm.

  • “I hope you enjoy the black parade.” ever think that person was talking about the actual album...? as for blaming ”emo” bands, particularly MCR, that’s complete bullshit. Bond did not pinpoint that she was going to kill herself b/c of MCR or any other band classified as emo. How did the band even-*sigh*-this is complete bullshit....

  • You can’t blame suicide on music, tv, videogames, magazines, radio....

  • But you can partailly attribute (alongside a whole group of variables) music, tv, videogames, magazines, radio etc as a trigger mechanism for those predisposed to violent acts whether to themselves or others.

  • Maybe if her parents sat down and talked to her a little bit, and explained to her that music like this isnt LITERAL..she wouldve understood it. Im not a fan of MCR, but im sick of people blaming music for their problems. Its not the bands fault, its the parents fault for not connected with their kid, because clearly she was looking for something/someone to connect with, and in her search found music. Bottom line : Pay attention to your kid.

  • Emo is just for people to express their feelings, but it just seems most ’emo’ kids today seem to be depressed and self harm, and that’s not what emo is all about.

  • Emo is for people who who are too afraid to be goth because it involves ’too much extreme behavior.’ Just screw all the lame labels. It’s all these teenagers that don’t ’fit in’ so they wear their sister’s pants and call it emo. Who the flip wants to fit in? BTW-MCR promotes living happy and healthly, so nobody can blame the band.

  • ok emo can be to blame the music is sinister its dark and if you constantly listen to sinister and dark music then you become impressionable upon. to be honest though how can anyone say ’emo’ is violent when you look at the way rap promotes violence, i think that all music has its values and downfalls but to be honest people who class themselves ’emo’ are pathetic and do need to realise songs are just songs there not for cults or clicks.

  • This stuff about EMO!! is a load of rubbish, the stereotypin of emo is stupid ... the main one being they slit their wrists and are always depressed. Many people that i know have never slit the wrists and i do admit there are a few that have Some people that self harm either have their own reasons to do. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!! Anyways MCR aint emo!!!! Bullies are the main cause of suicide, cz they bully people cz of the way they dress n it pathetic!! Nuff̵

And it make me so ANGRY that the media straight away blame these fantastic bands! They should get their genres right before accusing! And being ”emo” doesn’t make you suicidal, I know plenty of happy emos so everyone should stop being so stereotypical!!!!!

  • neither society nor a music band can be blamed for the suicide of a young girl, it´s pretty clear that the girl in question must have had more serious problems than what she listened to in order to willingly take her own life

That girl didnt kill herself because she was emo, its because she had PROBLEMS. its sad and all but it has nothing to do with any music you listen to. does listening to rap make you a criminal just because the lyrics talk about drugs and shooting people and whores? omg no..

  • I can’t believe this crap. What stupid, ignorant, ill-minded person would blame a genre of music and a type of fashion because they’re clearly MENTALLY challenged and ATTENTION CRAVING teenage girl killed herself? These people have no idea what they’re talking about; they’re getting information from biased boards and areas, rather than asking the EMO KIDS themsevles; they make up lies and make it seem like EMO is so awful. What’s is wrong with this world?

  • MCR doesnt kill people, it saves them and this young girl was messed up in her head, it is unfortunate but MCR is not responsible for this young girls death. The parrents are, any parent in there right mind knows that if a 13y/o says there goin to kill themselves, knows thats 1 of the many signs of depression, she was aparently self mutilating herself prior to the suicide, the parents should have gotten her help, i am what you would call an ”emo”, and i will tell u that EMO isnt the

She hid it at first, but we found out after she tried suicide. Please look at http://whatisemo.bravehost.com . • I was kinda surprised with a couple of the bands labled 'emo' and i must agree with so many others that these bands are just scapegoats. Just because people cut themselves and want to commit suicide, it doesn't mean it's the musics fault. I get called emo heaps at school and it pisses me off cause i really don't listen to much "emo" music at all. Another thing people need to get through their heads is that screamo doesn't mean emo...
