The month that Scarlett Johansson releases her debut solo album, the Tom Waits covers record ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’, we at Gigwise thought we pay tribute to those actors who have successfully (and unsuccessfully) dipped their feet into the music world. From the novelty to those that have forged glittering careers in the music industry, from Jared Leto to Steven Seagal, they’re all on this list.

  • How about Scott Grimes, who started out as a child actor in ”Critters,” has released two albums, and is still working in Hollywood today with roles in ”Band of Brothers,” ”Party of Five,”and ”ER”? His CD ”Livin’ on the Run” is one of my favorites!

  • Russell Crowe started his band before he appeared in any films (even in Australia.) Alanis Morissette’s short-lived stint as a child tv actor hardly qualifies her as a ”movie star who delved into music.” Glad to see Milla here (The Divine Comedy is brilliant, and much better than any acting performance she’s given since), and even Traci Lords, whose album is a fun mid90s time capsule. Good to see Minnie Driver included too, as her records are both very good.

  • Also, Charlotte Gainsbourg has an album out and it’s pretty good. And Toni Collette and the Finish. They’re stuff runs circles around most of the stuff listed here.

  • Mare Winningham and Kathleen Wilhoite have both released two excellent albums. And River Phoenix had a band called Aleka’s Attic. They released two songs on PETA benefit albums, had a song on the unreleased My Own Private Idaho soundtrack, and recorded an unreleased album.
