Foals have reacted angrily to the appointment of Conservative MP Boris Johnson as the new mayor of London.

Writing on their Myspace during a flight back to London, keyboardist Edwin Congreave said they feared “flying into a city that isn't so much a newly fascist city-state than one big gilded joke of a newspaper column made rotten flesh [is another].”

Johnson officially began his role as London’s new mayor at midnight on Sunday (May 4th) after his triumph in last Thursday’s mayoral elections.

The Conservative, who is as known for his tabloid headlines as he is his politics, replaces Ken Livingstone, who held the position for eight years.

Congreave said that the band would like to “salute” Johnson, “sort of like we'd salute any smug, self-satisfied old Etonian holding a statute-book to our heads.”

“Congratulations and good luck with the Olympics,” he added.

    • Why does every comment here seem to bash foals? It’s kind of hypocritical to have a go at them for expressing their opinion and yet think you should have the right to express your opinion on them. No-one’s killing democracy, they’re using the right to free speech that democracy brings with it. Insulting the newly elected mayor is insulting democracy and insulting Londoners who have just elected him. Mayor Boris won’t JUST be a laugh; he’ll be an excellent mayor.   • How about they stick to their jobs and let BJ do his? They will get judged on their music just as he will get judged on his performance as mayor.Would they like to be dismissed as uneducated fucktards? No? Unfair? Of course it would be.So what makes it any less unfair for them to dismiss BJ on account of his privileged background and image even before he has started the job?

  • I absolutely love foals for this. I like how they can see the sense in progressive left wing politics and how they are far better suited to London than an out of touch tory like Johnson despite being public schooled. Foals are already my favourite british band of the decade and this has thrown them up even higher in my mind.

  • Haha, so why should I listen to the ramblings of a bunch of nobodys, who clearly thing of themselves as a bunch of intellectual elites, yet clearly haven’t even read a thing on Boris or the election. Perhaps in future ’the Foals’ might be best to keep their political opinions to themselves.
