Gerard Way Speaks About Anti-Emo Violence In Mexico

My Chemical Romance man addresses fans...

Share

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has spoken directly to fans about the problem of anti-emo related violence in Mexico.

Tensions have escalated in the country over recent months with a series of reported attacks against people who have “an emo look”.

Addressing the audience at Zero Fest in Mexico City last Saturday (April 12th), Way said the band no longer wanted to see “any fucking violence”.

“I want to say something today before we continue. Recently we’ve been hearing a lot of stuff about some violence here in your country having to do with kids who want to wear black t-shirts…or some kind of bulls— stuff like that,” Way told the crowd.

“We don’t want to see any fucking violence. We came here for one reason, and that’s to be at the fucking rock show.”

The severity of the anti-emo movement in Mexico first came to the worlds attention in March when hundreds of supporters attacked emo’s in the city of Queretaro.

Since then there have been reports of further stand offs and isolated incidents in Chile.

It's thought that the movement is growing via soial networking sites and message boards.

What do you think about the violence? Are My Chemical Romance Right to speak out? Leave a comment and let us know...

  • Emos are fags but they shouldn’t get jumped for it.

    • ”emos are fags” What a ridiculous thing to say. Emos are just another youth subculture. The people who attack them are obviously insecure and taking out their low self-esteem on a highly visible group. It’s stupid, but it has huge negative effects on the people attacked, and on the communities where it’s happening. The attackers should get a clue and get a life.

    • talk about bad spam.....atleast I hope this is spam, to think a person could be so senseless.

      ~ by MeMees 5/5/2008

  • I think emo is shit, but that doesn’t justify violence towards the poor people who listen to it.. Just don’t buy the records or go to the gigs.

    • ”Anti-chav” Is no better or worse than anti-emo violence. The stereotypes are equally annoying and corruptive of today’s youth, but that’s only the ones who accept the label. People who assume a person is ”emo” only because they wear black, those are the ones that need to chill out, SOON. No one, no matter what they wear, should be beaten for something so stupid. We all joke about beating up emo kids but until these morons rolled around no one was serious.

  • I love the way he said and that bullshit, cause you all know he thinks emo is bullshit, hes just sticking up for emo fans. My hero :), even if is about fucking emos.

  • no one deserves to be attacked for what music they listen to. get a fucking life and let everyone else live theirs. anyone who attacks someone for what music they listen to and what clothes they wear is a coward. plain and simple. an intolerant, ignorant coward.

  • Go Gerard! Just like how people shouldn’t be victimised for their race, religion, sexuality or politics, they also shouldn’t be beaten for the music they listen to or what they wear. Whether you yourself like it or not, it’s not for you to decide what any one else wears or listens to. There is no justification for this violence.

  • I’m glad Gerard did that, someone finally had the guts to stand up and say something! I hate the whole emo term. Emo is short for emotinal..i’m sure the whole world knows that (and it’s also a music genre) now so why keep extending it...? I listen to My Chemical Romance, infact they’re my favourite band but that doesn’t mean I’m a walking music genre, yea I am emotional though...EVERYONE is! props for Gerard! :]

  • actualy everybody should decide for him/her self what kind of styl he/she want’s to wear. This exaggerated hate agains a YOUTH- styl is dispensable. Gerard Way is absolutly right! no Violence against any kind of styl!

  • It’s not fair to judge people by their looks, and as far as I know, you don’t hang out with someone because they have a special look and/or taste in music. Emo (the music genre) is a dead one, and has been for a long time. It’s just a lable the media’s using again to place bands they don’t know where to put. Emo WAS a music genre and you can’t be a music genre.

People are just blinded by ignorance, definitions and stereotypes. What kind of a world is it that someone gets attacked because they are wearing a certain color?

It´s their thing that they´re emo and they wear black clothes and cut their veins.

  • Well seeing as a lot of people think MCR are emo I doubt anyone attacking emos is going to take much notice of Gee Way, but he is right in saying it. People should just get on with their own lives not waste time attacking people for how they dress and what they listen to. It’s just pathetic.

MCR rules the world, love ya guys.

  • I’m super shocked that there has been actual violence towards people because they’re emo. I mean sure, they deserve a good verbal attack, but physical violence is taking things a little too far. They should do what we do in my town, and just alienate the hell out of them.

  • This is all really rediculous. It’s like saying if a group of Gothic looking people were to attack a group of people wearing suits and it is okay. Or it’s like Preppy looking people attacking Hippie looking people and nothing being done. It’s freedom of speech. You have your freedom to say whatever you want, and other people have the freedom to say what they want. Just because someone’s opinion is different than yours does not give you the right to hurt them.

Its just that people like you are so prejudice and I think its just stupid. Would you like your way of life to be insulted? Think about other people. Emos are people. Go think about it.

      ~ by Emma J 8/7/2008

  • This is insane! No one has the right to harm someone else because of the clothes they wear or the music they listen to or for any other reason. The governments of these countries need to crack down on violence in general, and not stand for this sort of thing. It’s crazy!

Amo demais o MCR. My Chemical Rom

Just cause they don’t listen to your music, wear black (or other dark clothes), Have piercings ect. doesn’’t mean you should treat them differently. Why should you hurt someone cause their a bit different? Its like black/whites all over again and everyone knows how long that went on for when ANY one person could have stopped it. Emos have feelings too. Think about it.
