Babyshambles fans have launched a Facebook group in a bid to free the band’s frontman Pete Doherty from prison.

Doherty was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail yesterday (April 8th) for breaking his probation order and using drugs.

The singer’s sentence, which began immediately, has forced his solo show at the Royal Albert Hall later this month to be postponed.

The group, entitled Free Pete Doherty, calls for the singer to be given “therapy, not punishment”.

Despite support from fans, Doherty has failed to capture the support of Gigwise readers, with 74% saying it’s about time he was sent to jail.

Doherty was given a suspended sentence for drug and driving offences in October last year.

The conditions of the sentence instructed him to appear in court for regular check-ups, as well as undertake a rehabilitation course.

Unless Doherty wins an appeal, he will miss a scheduled appearance at the Glastonbury Festival this June.

  • if i created a facebook group titled ’free Ian Huntley’, and recieved enough votes to make people noticed, that he will be released? what a pointless excercise the free P.D. group is.

  • It’s been coming, let’s face it. He’s been let off enough times and shouldn’t be given any more second chances just because he’s famous.

  • Hi all. My name is Tom and I created the FB group. As a fan of Pete (and, shockingly enough; his work, which rarely gets a mention in the UK press) I think it is important that we show our support during the bad times and the good. Those that read the wall posts will also note that it has triggered proactive discussion about drug rehabilitation. It’s all too easy to be negative and pick at a person’s faults, finding workable solutions however is much harder. Free Pete!

  • Say what you want..But a drug addict should never be thrown in jail...Peter is no exception..what help is that going to do except get the conservative media going..”oh thank god..finally that disgrace has been put behind bars..thank god we arnt anything like him scoff scoff”....Drug addiction is a disease that is not solved by throwing him in a prison with murderers and dangerous people..as we all know..Peter is not a danger to society..only to himself.

  • The group is run by fans of Pete’s like myself. We believe that Doherty should be freed as he needs help, which is something he wont get being locked up where drugs are readily available. Pete never glamourises the fact that he is a drug addict, only the media does that!!! Pete Doherty is a talented musician/songwriter and that is what needs to be adressed here, instead of small-minded individuals who cant see past the tabloid shit you all read everyday in the papers. FREE PETE!!!

  • Come on, would Coleridge, Shelley, Keats etc. have been the same without drugs? probably not. A world without people like Pete would be bloody boring, if no one ever tried to go against the status quo all we’d have to listen to’d be britney. imagine that.... have things changed that much since the times spoke out against the stones being jailed? clearly... btw the stones are past it (they were great tho), and I’m 18, not some aging stones fan! Long live bohemia! Free the poet!

  • I’d have expected nothing less than the negative comments on here, from obviously very small minded people who do not understand the nature of addiction. Yes Pete, has tried rehab before, and failed - does this mean he should stopped being offered this type of support? Do you think every addict beats the habit at the first try - no. We should be recognising the talent this man has, and the masterpieces he has already produced and seek to nuture and protect this. Give Pete the help he needs

  • The group exists to show ppl that us fans do support him. What is gained from throwing him in jail??? They let peadophiles get away without going to jail, but someone who has an actual problem (who is trying to address it) gets sent to jail. He needs help. Not for everyone to bask in his misery! What a hateful society! And don’t compare him to Ian Huntely! Thats a disgrace!!

  • He’s abused drugs for years & whatever your view of drug taking is the fact is it impacts on everyday life through everyday criminality which he subsidises through his habit. I bet you bunch of arse lickers would be the 1st to walk past people with bigger problems than him and denounce them as skagheads without giving a second thought. Most people dont have the safety net he’s had all these years. If you care that much volunteer at a rehab programme instead of hiding behind a com

If Elvis or jim morrison was put in prison people would want them out so i say give the man a break and appreciate him for his true genius

  • The tabloid reported only negative things. Why not mention the thousands of fans who believe in him? Why not realise that he’s a person and not a puppet by slamming on the front page whenever the opportunity presents itself? We’re the true fans! Those who follow him for his music, his texts, for his voice, his poetry.. We,that suffering and crying with him.. WE, THAT ALWAYS SUPPORT OUR PETE, IN ANY EVENT. PETE WE’RE WITH YOU. WE BELIEVE IN YOU. PETE WILL NEVER BE ALONE..

  • Doherty is a modern musical genius. The public and the media have kicked up similar uproar in the past over the likes of the Sex Pistols, Guns’n’Roses, Ozzy Osborne & Iggy Pop- Pete Doherty is just their newest scapegoat. Long live his one man rebellion against the soulless hegemony of carbon copy pop and rock stars, churned out by record labels. Free Pete Doherty; let the son of Albion roam free.

  • ahhhh im so mad, leave pete alone for gods sake the guy is so talented why does everyone always focus on the drugs. Nobody cared before Kate Moss, very few people have got what he has! TALENT. Drugs or not. You only have to watch an interview with him to see hes so honest and has an inocence thats a breath of air. I saw him in November he was on top form and played an amazing set. Prison is pointless to put him away is silly and look todays Sun front page Pete is said to be doing loads of gear.
