Chris Martin: 'Not Everyone Will Like Our New Album'

Chris Martin says that Coldplay’s impending new album, due out this May, is so different to their first three that he’s fully aware “everyone might not like it.”

The band are currently busy putting the finishing touches to the record in North London with the legendary Brian Eno, and, speaking from the studio, they made it explicit that this album should be treated as a separate entity to their other works.

Guitarists Jonny Buckland explains: "We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that. So we wanted to do something different."

The Rolling Stone, who carried out the interview, describe the album as ‘darker’ and it deals with ‘themes of loneliness and death.’

Frontman Chris Martin admitted that there is more depth to this album than previous ventures: "Whether or not it's good, we certainly started to use more colours. It's impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that. It's just the freedom to say, 'Everyone might not like this. We're into it at the moment, so let's just get it done.'"

Reflecting upon Brian Eno’s involvement, Buckland continued that he brought in some quite basic but highly influential changes, such as taking more breaks.

"It wasn't so much that he brings like a sound or something to it. He brings lots of ideas about everything, even down to like how we structured our day," he said.

Tracks that appear on the as-yet-untitled new album include ‘Cemeteries of London’, ‘Reign Of Love’, ‘Life In Technicolor’ and ‘Death and All His Friends.’

U2 became the biggest act in the world, when Eno joined, Slowdive broke down, after Eno joined. Travis gave out a mediocre album, after they threw Eno out. Everything can happen, looking forward to whatever.

i’m glad they’re going for a different sound. i’m a big fan and i’d be disappointed if they played it too safe and went with a familier sound. i like surprises.

hey all u Coldplay haters, why r u even reading this? this doesn’t pertain to you!!! for all u Coldplay lovers, bring it on baby! may be this album will be gold and may be it won’t be, but i am looking forward to it regardless!!! Coldplay is an amazing band with a depth of sound that is so poetic! Great bands like U2 etc. all have hits and misses, so im just glad that their music comes from the heart. with that, u can’t go wrong. i can wait until the album is out!!

Looking forward to the next album. Sounds interesting. Can’t wait until they start touring again - they really are great live. Can’t understand why people feel the need to comment on something they don’t like... especially when you’ve already made up your minds to hate it before you’ve even heard it. Somebody needs to sort-out those lack lustre twats. The last album was very poorly produced in common with a lot of albums nowadays. Let’s hope Eno can turn it round for them.
