Nothing can faze George. There were no Wayne’s World “we’re not worthy” moments when working with ‘Started A Fire’s’ uber-producer Steve Lillywhite, of Morrissey, the Stones and U2 fame. “We weren’t in awe, he just seemed like a really normal guy who just happened to have worked with legends.” But what did working with someone of his stature bring to the recording process? “The way it sounds, the little arrangements, we basically laid down all the songs and we just went through them one by one. He didn’t really change anything he just helped us add little parts and stuff like that.” And the finished article? “This album’s really special; a great capture of where we are at the moment.”
Though One Night Only can certainly write an ambient pop ballad able to attract a mass of skinny jeans and converse, the life of any new band is becoming a dangerous game; a repetitive bass line and Skins advert can propel you to the heights of cultural icons. Conversely, an unruly Camden bender can mean it’s not long before your guitarist is firmly ensconced between two sweaty strangers in the Never Mind The Buzzcocks identity parade - does this sort of pressure worry George? “I think that it worries me in the way that the music industry is, but I think it’s the music that matters the most, people buying it and downloading it. I think that if anything comes of all this it’s to do with the fans and the music.”
And so Gigwise’s brief foray into George’s world has left us confused. After we leave we’re not quite sure whether to sing One Night Only’s praises as the real ‘next big thing,’ or call their mums and tell them to make sure their sons don’t do anything silly. One thing we’re sure of is that with George behind them it can’t be long before he’s talking about the next album, then after that… world domination? “I would love to tour again and then hopefully a world tour, then make a great second album and hopefully just keep going forwards.” The proof will be in the Yorkshire pudding.
