Sir Cliff Richard Slams 'Out Of Tune' Beatles

With their 'horrific' guitar solos...

Sir Cliff Richard has again proved his rock’n’roll credentials by slamming The Beatles for recording with out of tune guitars.

The veteran popstar says in a new interview with Q Magazine that he’s mystified as to why the Fab Four released music featuring “horrific” guitar solos.

"Some of the guitar is so out of tune it's unbelievable,” he muses “I couldn't believe that here they were in this hi-tech age and they couldn't go back and do it with a tuned guitar."

Don’t scoff kids – Sir Cliff knows what he’s talking about. Well, he must do because, as he explains, “I’ve sold more singles than...everybody."

Expect Celine Dion’s expose on Bob Dylan’s singing voice in next month’s issue.

The Beatles One went on to become the best selling greatest hits CD by a group. This music was written decades ago and is still cherished by the world. Cliff Richard isn’t a pimple on the butt of the Beatles talent wise. It seems that he’s envious and jealous of the fact that 99% of his success has been in his own backya

Anyway my point is George does not write his songs and it sure did not hurt him. So just because you don’t write your own songs does not mean you cannot make it as a singer. I am a guitarist who enjoys playing everything from Cliff, Beatles, Clapton, Dire Straits, Oasis, Joe Satriani, Bon Jovi etc. etc. - in other words, all kinds of rock etc. Cont.d in next box by "db"

  • Cont.d.The problem we have here (I am a Beatle fan too) is 1. most Beatles fans are so one-eyed that they think the Beatles "invented" everything, from feedback, to 8 track, to going over time in studio 2, having screaming fans that stopped the music being heard, making a band film that is totally "strange" and full of good music, etc. They believe these things and it has become so widespread that people can't see the wood for the trees.

  • Cont.d. They also believe that the Beatles were the best at everything. The Beatles were GREAT, but lets be open about the facts. Not everything they did was "stunning". Likewise, not everything others did was stunning. Also, the Beatles "playing" DID (for some reason saying this is "controversial" :) ) leave room for improvement. Check the very last note of "In my Life". If you are a guitarist, you'll know what I mean! Finger lift!

  • Contd. I love In my Life, but I don't pretend its not there. It is even said by some that George was one of the greatest ever lead guitarists. Such a title is subjective, but even books "about" George say that he wasn't the best guitarist and that frankly, Hank Marvin (Cliff and the Shadows lead) "would have been able to outplay George blind-folded" (or similar quote).

Mind you, Cliff wasn't on it, so it may not have got through if he had have been! Musicians (in band/or session) know that Cliff is a perfectionist when it comes to HIS songs and things have to be right.

Cliff (I am pretty sure) did not offer this comment up but was asked about the Beatles abilities. 2. Cliff has in the past praised the Beatles (SO MUCH!) i.e. in a concert saying "Just as you can't do something from the 50s without doing Elvis, you couldn't have the 60's without something from the Beatles, could you?"

The Beatles played their latest (early song) and asked their advice, and they knew it would be a hit.

In other words, like it or not, he knew how recordings were done and the processes gone through (or not). Afterall, he was in studio 2 long before the Beatles. He knew what it was like in there, even when recording live with 200 fans screaming (Their 1st LP was recorded live with fans inside studio 2)

Some people believe the Beatles are "untouchable" and that "everything" done by them was "THE" thing! i.e. if Beatles did such and such, then "this" was inovation, it was "the" trend to follow, and if others did "something ELSE", this wasn't seen as inovative, "the thing", but "out of step with...", behind the times, off-beat etc. I LOVE the Beatles, but sadly this way of thinking has gone way to far.

The stuff they "DID!" Even people who get a bit of it still think everything has a "middle 8" even when there aren't 8! :) O.K. We'll leave that one out, as lots of bands use that term freely.

  • Hi again, Sorry. I don't want to cause trouble, but just opn it up. An example is found at the end of 'In My Life'. George seems to lift his finger off the fretboard and stopping the sustain of the note and causing it to sound dead. Easy thing to do when you don't hold down the strings firmly with enough strength.

  • If you want some more examples, here are some I know people have mentioned but I will check if true: Can't buy me love (background guitar solo) I'm looking through you (guitar out of tune notes-right ch.) Let it Be (pastmasters right ch.) (guitar wrong notes) All my loving (Paul bass sharp note) All u need is love (bass) Bad Boy Do u want to know a secret (bass wrong note) I want you (bass note) Long and winding road (bass note)

  • Cont.d from above. There are also loads of things on their recordings that shouldn't have been; mistakes, bad edits, sounds of guitars getting put down, old takes still hearable in the background, messed up words etc. Personally I like that as it gives us more to look into when listening, but a lot of it was not intended. As I said, they were not alone in this and Cliff too recently re-mastered Cliff and the Shad's 'On the beach' which could be heard to have Cliff coughing.

  • Cont.d from above. For more on Beatles mistakes, one site that looks at some of it is: http://www.stevesbeatles.com/wgo/list.asp Have a look. I have nothing to do with the site by the way. :)

  • I agree with Sir Cliff! None of the beatles together or singular could compare to Sir Cliff - he is the UK's most successfull singer and is a British institution! Keep on making the fantastic music and selling out concerts worldwide Sir Cliff - you are the greatest and speak a lot of sense! :-)

  • The Beatles and Cliff both are good in their own way. I think The Bee Gees and an American group Paul Revere and the Raiders are great also but seem to be over looked as some of the best groups. The Beatles were the first to use the idea of videos for their music and they orchestrated their music. They were pioneers of this.
