Dave Grohl is reportedly waiting on a very important phone call, an invitation to go drum on the rumoured Led Zeppelin reunion tour.

Apparently the Foo Fighters man is desperate to take control of the skins for anymore shows the band might play despite the fact that he praised Jason Bonham’s performance at the O2 Arena show.

According to one of those people that seem to know everything – the insider – Grohl was also in the running to take Bonham’s role at the London gig.

The source told the Daily Star: Dave flew in especially for the shows and played air guitar and air drums throughout the gig.

“He was in the running to take over from John Bonham a few years ago and he’s still gagging to get on stage with the Zep.

“While he loves playing with Foo Fighters, Dave would drop anything to be part of Zep’s shows.”

  • Dave Grohl is an excellent drummer. But Jason Bonham is John’s son. As far as I can tell, he did a fantastic job at the O2 concert, so why look any further? I hasten to add at this point that I’m a Led Zeppelin nut (not just a fan, but a total fucking lunatic for them). His knowledge of his father’s work must be just that bit more personal than anyone else on the planet. Also, I know it’s not really relevant, but Led Zeppelin is an English band. No offence Dave.

  • It’s right that Jason get’s the gig, after his memorable performance at 02. Also his Presence (pun) is exactly what his father would want to see.

    • Very true, after a performance like that, his dad would be proud! Lets stay will the Bonham name. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham. NOT Grohl.

  • You are right but Led Zeppelin want something better than a regular drummer from the Foreigner...No offence Jason.

    • a ”regular” drummer from Foreigner??? I’m curious......what kind of drummer is Dave Grohl??? Go and listen to the live Zeppelin tracks on the Nirvana box set.....he couldn’t SHINE JASON’S SHOES when it comes to blasting through Zeppelin tracks.....

  • Why didn’t Jason do those drum hits at the beginning of ”Nobody’s Fault but Mine” during the O2 show? Although I do believe that Dave is a (slightly) better drummer than Jason, it seems to make more sense to have John’s son behind the kit. What the f&%k does being British have to do with it you jackass? Besides, Dave looks like a horse!!!

  • Jason Bonham should be the one and only choice. This is how John would have wanted it.

  • JOHN BONHAM would want his SON, JASON, to be drummer for Led Zeppelin. His dad would of been proud, Jason did a GREAT job!!! If they do tour 2008 or 09, i rather see Jason BONHAM, NOT Dave Grohl.

  • This is total bullshit. Bonham is the only name that will ever be in a Led Zeppelin gig. The guy is capable and has been waiting his whole life. He passed the audition. IF they tour, it will be Jason on drums. Period.

  • Jason Bonham is the ONLY choice. Any TRUE Led Zeppelin fan would want that! After all, the performance Jason gave with a reunited Zeppelin, it should be an obvious choice. He was absolutely amazing! After a performance like that, im sure dear ol dad would want it that way as well as all the Zeppelin fans.

  • No one deserves the Zeppelin drum throne more than Jason Bonham. Grohl is a fantastic drummer, of course, but in this case he’s just a high-profile fanboy.

  • Anyone who knows anything about drums knows that Grohl’s style is highly influenced by Bonham. He’s a massive Zep fan, not to mention he has two tattoos of Bonham’s Zep logo. Jason is obviously the ’default’ choice but if Page, Plant and Jones want this generation’s John Bonham, they’ll go with Grohl. This rumour doesn’t surprise me at all.

  • This is a lame non-story that has been picked up by the press based on some offhand comments from Grohl about how much he would love the job, not because of any real plan to replace Jason.

  • No way - it’d be disgraceful to ditch Jason after his performance at the O2. No-one could’ve done a better job standing in for the mighty John Henry. If there’s a Zep tour, Jason is the man for it!

  • To me it doesn’t really make a difference, just as long as the reunion tour of the century occurs. However, it doesn’t make sense to strip Jason Bonham of his duty as drummer.

  • Go listen to Dave Grohl on the Nirvana Box Set, they do ”Heartbreaker”. He played like crap, a total insult to John Bonham, well, Zeppelin for that matter. Also listen to a bootleg of the ”Immigrant Song” performed by Nirvana...theres no way Dave plays drums better than Jason. But anyways, being a true Zeppelin fan, i say Jason Bonham! The Prince of Thunder!

      ~ by drummerkid 1/13/2008

  • This is complete rubbish. Zeppelin would NEVER take Dave Grohl over Jason Bonham unless, and only unless, they needed a fill-in. Just look at the YouTube performances . . . that’s all you need.

  • Dave’s a great drummer and by all accounts a good guy but he does himself no favours by trying to muscle his way on to the drum stool....then again prehaps the whole thing is just being exaggerated by the music press, I mean who wouldn’t want to be on stage with those guys.

  • First of all Dave Grohl is MEDIOCRE AT BEST,he has no background of the main ingredients that made Bonham the drummer that he was, jazz, blues, funk.I think that Dave has a ploy to start these rumors himself, the only reason Dave is where he is today is because of Kurt Cobain, and he even admitted that Kurt didnt care for his drumming, any novice drummer could have filled the spot with ease.John Bonham would be rolling in his grave if he knew these bullshit rumors were surfacing.

  • Led Zeppelin is my favorite all-time rock band. I never got to see Led Zeppelin in concert. I’ve seen Plant solo, Page solo, JPJ solo, the Page and Plant tour and even saw Jason Bonham’s band Bonham back in the day. If Zeppelin does tour, i would want Jason Bonham as the drummer, its the right thing.

  • Dave is an great drummer.... there’s no doubt, but I have a feeling that most of the attention being given to this is a little much. There is no way the gent’s in Zep would remove JB. At most, I can see Dave dropping in for 1 song during their US show. Best bet is this is simply a viral way to associate FF and Zep for a combined show.... a show that Zep would headline.
