Queen's Freddie Mercury Voted No1 Rock Legend

Ahead of Elvis and Bowie...

Queen's Freddie Mercury Voted No1 Rock Legend Add to My Fav Bands List
Share

Queen’s late frontman Freddie Mercury has been voted the top rock legend of all time in a fresh poll.

The star, who died in November 1991, beat the likes of Elvis Presley (second place) and Jimi Hendrix (third), in the highly debatable poll by Australia’s best selling newspaper The Herald Sun.

However, somehow middling rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who came in at fifth place, was above such legends as David Bowie (tenth), Mick Jagger (ninth) and, erm, Slash (sixth), questioning the integrity of the poll.

CLICK HERE to see where Freddie Mercury comes in Gigwise's Greatest Frontmen poll.

The full top ten looks like this:

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Elvis Presley
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Ozzy Osborne
5. Jon Bon Jovi
6. Slash
7. Meatloaf
8. Eric Clapton
9. Mick Jagger
10. David Bowie

  • Freddie Mercury is the biggest rock legend in history. He upstages even Elvis. There will NEVER be another talent like Freddie. His vocals were amazing and his vocal range can’t compare with anyone else on the list. This man could sing anything aqnd proved it by doing an opera cd.

  • Elvis was by FAR the best--it’s proven by how influential he was. I would bet that if you asked a number of successful musicians/entertainer the same question--they would agree.

  • Some people fail to realize that without Elvis as the forerunner, many of our favorite musicians would not even have picked up an instrument, and who knows what direction music would have taken. Elvis was the FIRST real Rock and Roll superstar, and nobody else even comes close.

  • Elvis Presley was and still is the GREATEST Singer/Entertainer of All-Time. He was the ORIGINAL and TEMPLATE for all who followed. He had an enormous talent and could sing in any musical genre he cared to including Gospel, Country, R & B, Pop, Rock ’n’ Roll’ Calypso and others. Other artists on the list have stuck mainly to pop music or one particular musical genre. Elvis is the most copied artist ever. He was sui generis.

  • Elvis, Beatles, Dylan, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Who, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Stones (longevity), Elton John (you had to be there.) Any order following The Beatles at number one. My OPINION is based on my PERCEPTION of the impact each artist made in establishing Rock as art and also by influencing subsequent ”artists” to create both an exceptional body of work that will endure and unfortunately a tremendous amount of banality and pure crap.

  • How can anyone place David Bowie above Freddie Mercury beggers belief! Freddie was quite simply the ultimate showman of all time. And his voice was incredible in the true sense of the word. Remember when Bowie and Queen played at Live Aid, Freddie blow them all off the stage. No one else even came close. Freddie deserves to be number one because he could command any crowd at any event. If you don’t believe me, just watch Live Aid!

  • Greatest vocalist of all time. Greatest frontman of all time. Lead vocalist of the greatest band of all time. Over 300 million records sold. Greatest live performance of all time. Writer of the greatest song of all time. Spent the longest time in the UK charts than any other group. Ever. Yes, including The Beatles. Yep, I believe Freddie can wear the crown of the greatest rock legend with much pride. In my opinion though, he is miles ahead of anyone else.

  • If voice was the only variable, I would say Freddy. If you add the stage act, then others will also come to mind, but he’s still be in the lead. But add writing skills, and all hell breaks loose. Add the effect that the musician had on his, and following generations, then we have Elvis to think about, since writing was not a variable in his time. Add capacity to sing in multiple musical idioms, communication skills, access to his fan base, looks, prescense, and you come up with.....Elvis
