Radiohead Net 4.8million Pounds From 'In Rainbows' Add to My Fav Bands List

A poll of in excess of 3,000 people on a Record of the Day website has found that the average price a Radiohead fan paid for a copy of ‘In Rainbows’ was £4.

Corroborated with our exclusive that the Oxford band shifted 1.2million copies of the album – thanks to inside knowledge of a source close to the band – it means that Radiohead could have potentially earned a massive £4.8million from the album already!

Because the band doesn’t have a record deal, they get to keep the vast majority of the money with minimal overheads. If they were to sell the album through an online distributor, for example, they could see as little as a quarter of that money.

Of course, the band are netting more money via the £40 album box set sales and also the physical CD when it’s released early next year. Download sales are also set to continue.

It seems Thom Yorke and co. are laughing all the way to the bank, then.

  • There are overheads, you’re forgetting bandwith, studio costs, a producer, money going to the payment processor. But still, they must have netted a lot after those.

  • This is a bit basic. It’s also speculating wildly. Of course there are overheads, they’ve just saved a bit on distribution/promotion and seem to have held onto %100 of the royalties. You’re basically making up a story here.

  • If any band in the world actually deserved the money alleged here, then Radiohead does. Perhaps the music industry will heed the clarion call in ”2+2=5” and start paying attention.

  • I’ll believe the 1.2 million figure when I see it confirmed by the band. I’m guessing that it’s about ten times too high a number. Come on.

  • 1.2 million isn’t unrealistic at all. they’re the biggest band in the world selling their album for whatever their fans deem appropriate. and where they would only net 5 to 15% through record deal royalties, they’re definitely cashing in using this model. the ”overhead” is super minimal in the scheme of things. they’re cleaning up. more power to ’em.

  • So, you surveyed 3000 people out of 1,200,000? Let me get my calculator... That’s .0025% of the people. That also assumes that the people who visit that site to vote on Radiohead stuff are your ”average” downloaders. And that 1,200,000 number may be one that Gigwise just made up, anyhow. I like how confident they are in their article title though.

  • i would like to know how the industry is going to respond to this album when it comes to awards. for instance, labels issue gold or platinum titles as a way to increase sales. the grammys are based on sales and industry insiders. me thinks neither radiohead nor their fans care about such pomp and circumstance parades, but still -- i wonder.

  • Radiohead couldn’t have spent all that much money in recording the album. because they own like 200.000 dollars worth of recording gear from all the records they’ve made. so they probably have to pay rent for a place to use it. and pay a crew to get it running. which probably doesn’t exeed 15.000 dollars all together. of course who knows what kind of deal they work out with the producer.

  • my personal feeling would be that figure is a tad high, but who knows maybe its a tad low.. i hope the band release the figures. either way its a great shift to where profit deserves to go. the record label model is about raping the artist and the consumer, and they don’t want to learn.
