Arcade Fire are a band that can only be described as different. Formed in 2003, Montreal, Canada they began to twist every form of music imaginable to create their own brand of post/experimental/indie rock- such a description is generalised because they mix and mash so many of the styles encompassed in these genres. It’s the type of sound you have to hear it to believe it!
The same year as the birth of the band, the self-titled debut single appeared and they later signed with the label Merge and recorded their first studio album. Despite numerous family tragedies shared amongst the band, along with the happier event of the Chassagne and Win Butler’s wedding, the album, known as 'Funeral' was released in September 2004 and a headline tour of the United States followed suit.
But it’s not been until recently that Arcade Fire caught the attention of the British public. The single 'Power Out' which demonstrates their style in every sense perfectly, prompted such as response as for them to be invited to play the Carling Weekenders at Reading and Leeds this year. Such a bizarre and energetic stage act put Arcade Fire firmly in the minds of all those who have seen them perform, and they continue to remain there with 'Power Out'. A recent New York performance with David Bowie has ensured their position as the kings and queens of cool for some time yet.
