London’s Metro is famous for being one of those stages every band has to play at some stage in their career before they hit the big time. Indeed, it has seen just about anyone you’d care to name pass through it’s doors at one point and tonight is no exception, as new kids on the block The Tunics prop up the bill for calculated noise makers My Device.
South Londoners, The Tunics, bring a fresh edge to the now all to common indie–punk sounds with scuzzy Libertines-esque guitars and lyrics that wouldn’t go amiss on an early Artic Monkeys record. This is all topped by surprisingly strong vocals for a 17-year-old in the shape of frontman Joseph Costello (that’s right they’re all young ‘uns!). The crowd show their love as each song ends - all except for their last number which descends into a gypsy gone rap thing that brings the set down a notch. It will be worth keeping an eye on The Tunics because with a bit of graft and a lot of tightening up and they could go far.
My Device blast straight into their set with a full on gusto that nails you to the floor- jangly riffs, drums that ticks and screaming; this band have got it all. The set forces sharp songs against more melodic ones (‘Eat Lead’ and ‘Super Tonio’ being the best of the night) which sounds good on paper, but soon gets too full on as they carry on hitting hard with their less structured tunes. Everyone here though doesn’t seem to care as they duly shout for more. Abrasive? Yes. Alternative? Most certainly. A good band? Well… the demand for an encore which My Device oblige (after fending off a lone drunken heckler) with a less than a minute long song, speaks for itself.
