Arctic Monkeys: 'Playing Live Earth Is Hypocritical'

They wouldn't play the event...

Arctic Monkeys say that wouldn’t consider performing at Live Earth this weekend because it would be hypocritical to play.

The band feel that their expensive stage set up and the fact that they jet all over the globe for their gigs isn’t good advertising for preventing climate change.

Speaking to the French new agency AFP, drummer Matt Helders said: We're using enough power for ten houses just for lighting. It'd be a bit hypocritical."

Bassist Nick O’Malley interjected: "And we're always jetting off on aeroplanes."

They join the likes of Bob Geldof, Roger Daltrey and the Pet Shop Boys who have all questioned Al Gore’s event. Only Keane have been vocal in defending it from the abuse.

 • Live Earth or ”woodenstock” as it’s been called is the epitome of hypocrisies. I’m not usually a rock fan, but I like Arctic Monkeys for their stand against the waste.

 • Wo wo wo, Arctic Monkeys & everyone else, get off your high horses !

I’m sure this has already been looked into, yeah ok lots of energy etc will be used at this event, but that’ll be a small sacrifice to pay, if it helps channel peoples thoughts towards looking after the planet.

Suppose if the Arctic Monkeys feel that bad about it being hypocritical to play the event, then surely it’s also hypocritical to play ever again ? • ”but that’ll be a small sacrifice to pay, if it helps channel peoples thoughts towards looking after the planet.” That would be true if this problem was news. People have been warned about this for decades. But I guess it’s only worth caring when enough celebrities tell you to. Seems to me those people would still only care on a superficial level, but hey, they got a free gig out of it! Wooo!
