Song BMG have announced they will no longer be releasing Prince’s new album after his decision to give away thousands of copies for free.

The singer-songwriter has agreed to give away copies of ‘Planet Earth’ with the Mail On Sunday, with ticket holders for one of his upcoming 21 gigs at London’s O2 Arena also receiving a CD.

A spokesperson for Sony BMG now says, “Given the sheer number of copies we are talking about here it seemed the right thing to do for retailers to become exempt from the deal in the UK."

  • something must be wrong with prince. i guess he’s overwhelmed with his ticket sale.No business man in his right mind would definitely work with him with such idea. he’d better think twice about his free cd before official album sales.

  • Good one, Dan! I hope the record companies paid you well because everybody else would disagree. Selling physical CDs is not viable anymore. It is now cheaper to get 1 month’s worth of broadband than it is to buy an average album. Prince has ALWAYS talking about giving his music away - it’s the main reason he split from Warner and went nameless for a while. It seems Prince would prefer to make his music from reasonably-priced gigs and merchandise.

  • I AGREE PETE Im sure that ”The Mail On Sunday” worked a deal with Prince before giving the Cd’s away for free. I’m sure he will make more off THAT DEAL than retail sales. Theres ”NO MONEY” in retail sales these days. Prince makes more $$$ now than he ever did during the WARNER era

  • The only ”people” upset with this deal are the record executives. Prince realizes that he no longer has the ”commercial” stations to play his material and as an artist he would still like to get his recordings to the public. If he can give them away and still have people pay to come to see his concerts.....more power to him! Prince will always be the trailblazer in the music industry!
