Church School Withdraws Anti Religious 'Imagine' From Show

A church school in Devon has axed John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ from a production after teachers deemed that the lyrics were anti-religious.

Pupils at the school were due to sing the song and had spent some time rehearsing it.

But on reflection, teachers withdrew the song thinking lines like “Imagine there’s no heaven… and no religion too” were anti-Christian.

Head teacher Geoff Williams told the BBC: "The teacher came to talk to me about it because she was concerned and I supported her.

"As a church school we decided it was not appropriate to sing it."

The Reverend David Harris from nearby church St Leonards and is also a director at the school supported the decision.

He said: "The song expresses longing for a different world and for eternal happiness but it says you can have this without religion."
