Sting has somehow decided it’s a good idea to release an album of 16th century lute music.
We’ve got guitarist Dominic Miller to blame. He gave Sting a lute two years ago, which apparently reminded the former Police frontman of a dormant love of ancient songwriter John Dowland, who composed exclusively for the instrument.
Sting, speaking on his website, helpfully explains, “He was really the first singer-songwriter that we know of and so a lot of us owe our living to this man."
He adds, “It's a strange record, a delightful record and I think people will be intrigued by it. The album is voice and lute, there are a few four part harmonies that I sing and it's all music from the 16th century."
The as-yet-entitled LP is being released by classical label Deutsche Grammophon (EMI must have passed on it for some reason) in October. We can’t wait….
